Parking Lot Speech


Parking Lot Speech: The importance of STEM education in relation to my project is that STEM education needs financial support to help all levels of students because more and more jobs are open for STEM fields and they will continue to grow. These students need support for their STEM education as well as help for minorities as well to incorporate a more diverse STEM field. The value of a strong STEM education allows students to apply their skills to whatever career they enter and use their hands-on engaging projects to fuel their creativity in the workplace and future endeavors. A strong understanding of STEM topics will also support students understanding for a societal aspect, so they can make informed decisions for environmental protection as well as political comprehension.

My parking lot speech has changed in that I see more value in diversity and supporting minorities as well as current students who are low achievers in STEM fields and feel supporting them is just as important if not more important than helping the already high flying STEM students. It has been reinforced by the research and my project issue of policies and funding in STEM education and my project plan to increase programs to support students struggling in STEM education.

STEM Issues Project Planning Sheet Part 2

1) Where should you focus your energies to be sure to complete your research and planning sheet?
In order to complete my research and planning sheet, I should focus my energies on finding grants in the state of Maryland that support STEM education(specifically mathematics) that I could add to a matrix with names of various grants, how much they can provide, how often these grants are available, and whether they request matching funds. Furthermore, I should spend time to look into Building to Teach and how I can use their concepts for hands-on mathematics to create lesson plans and summer programs to support student learning for struggling students before they get into high school.

Module 4- Reflective Blog

The topic that interests me the most is Policy and Funding of STEM Education. The topic interests me because as a public school teacher, funding is always a critical issue and with the newest president who plans to shake things up in business and in DC, I am very curious as to what will happen to public education. President Trump has talked about his disagreement with Common Core already as well as his desire to increase parent school choice which could greatly affect public and private schools. In addition, he has said little about what he plans to do with the current state of STEM education and whether or not he supports it as well as where he stands with current bills that would provide funding for STEM programs.



I could address this topic within my internship setting by speaking with experienced coworkers who have worked through several presidents and the changes that they have seen and felt throughout the years and whether or not to be concerned for future changes in the near future. Additionally, I could speak with my schools administration to ask their opinions on this topic to see what they have experienced as school administrators and what they have heard so far about possible changes and what they would look like.

Module 1- Reflective Writing

1)     How would you describe STEM education to a friend or family member in informal conversation?
-        If I were to describe STEM education to a friend or family member, I would tell them how STEM education has a large emphasis on discovery learning, learning through applications, and hands-on engagement. STEM education is an individual learning process that can and should be tailored to meet the needs of each and every student. The education for each student should be equivalent in the content being taught, but flexible in that way that each student is able to learn and master the material.

2)     Why do you think STEM education is (or is not) important?
-        I believe STEM education is important because many careers and opportunities revolve around STEM education. Furthermore, many of the processes that run our world from the laws of physics to the behavior of Mother Nature can be demonstrated and understood through a strong STEM education. In addition, while the goal of STEM education is not to make every student concentrate on STEM related careers, I feel that STEM education can be helpful for anyone in any career to have a better understanding of the world around you no matter what field that you enter in the workplace.  Moreover, I feel that STEM education can help students when they start working through the ideas of problem solving and creativity (Deangelis, 2017).  

3)     What is the value of incorporating or enhancing STEM in public education?
-        The value of incorporating and enhancing STEM in public education is that students with a strong education in STEM content will be better informed of the world around them and have a greater appreciation for their planet. I feel this is important for 21st century learners and future workers because through a deeper understanding citizens will be more aware to protect our planet with the changing climate as well as other major issues like growing transportation and population with a limited number of roads and agriculture space for our planet. The next generation of learner will be the bright minds who solve the major problems of this century. For instance, some teachers are already finding their students working through solutions for things like carbon emissions as high school students (Mason, 2016).
4)     Exploration
-        I looked through the article Wired.com as well as the article on The Huffington Post. I found these articles to be very helpful to have another point of view for a more diverse understanding of STEM education. My original thoughts were reinforced because of the idea that the skills learned through STEM education can be applied to whatever career or future plans that you have with the ideas of creativity and problem-solving skills. Some additional reasons that STEM education should be involved in the planning and teaching is that a strong STEM education provides students with a context and an application for their learning and where the ideas might apply in the future. For instance, I taught quadratic equations to my students and provided them the context of throwing objects or projectiles like rockets and the idea of how NASA calculated sending a man to the moon. On Social Media, I found under the STEM Education twitter account several tweets about events and articles for the pursuit of increasing the number of women and minorities involved in STEM-related fields to create a more diverse atmosphere with new ideas.
